Turku University Choir Achievements

Turku University Choir celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2017. Through the years, the choir has established itself as an essential part of music life in Turku. With a lot of hard work, the choir has recorded five albums and regularly has its own concerts as well as performed in collaboration with orchestras, various choirs and others. On an international scale, the choir has also been in competitions and festivals and actively aims to create new cooperative contacts.

9 May 2009 Lauluja kotoa (“Songs to Come Home To”)
The choir’s spring concert, performed at the Old Academy Building, was built around a river theme and included, for example, the 5-piece choral work Pikavuaro Turkku (“Express Bus to Turku”) by Mikko Heiniö and minimalist works by Polish composer Henryk Gòrecki. This was the last concert to be conducted by Markus Yli-Jokipii.
14 February 2009 Sydämelliset sävelet (“Notes From the Heart”)
Various TYY Choir singing groups performed at the Sibelius Museum to celebrate St Valentines Day. The audience filled the auditorium and enjoyed the warm-hearted must performed by both old familiar groups and groups picked for the concert.
13 December 2008 Valoa (“Light”)
The Choir had its album release concert at Turku Cathedral. The best tracks from the newly released CD, Valoa, were performed at the advent concert that brought in a record number of audience members. The concert also featured Christmastime music of Sweelinck, Lasso and Kuula.
9 May 2008 Sauna palaa! (“Strike up the Sauna!”)
The TYY Choir and its singing groups performed at the Old Academy Building around a theme of Finnishness. The performance featured, among others, the premiere of Lauri Mäntysaari’s Kehtolaulu (“Lullaby”). Read about the performance in Turun Sanomat (in Finnish).
8 December 2007 Lämpimän akateeminen adventtikonsertti
The TYY Choir performed with the Savo Student Nation Singers (Helsinki) at Michael’s Church in Turku.
21 November 2007 Elämän päivät (”Days of Life”)
The TYY Choir performed a long forgotten cantata by Leevi Madetoja at Turku Concert Hall together with the Campus Symphony Orchestra, featuring soprano Kaisa Ranta. Turun Sanomat hailed the concert as “a fabulous cultural endeavour of student musicians” and expressed that “the TYY Choir was truly brilliant” (TS 23.11.2007).

17 – 20 April 2008 NSSS 2008 Festival in Stavanger, Norway
2006 Coleraine choir competition in Northern Ireland. The TYY Choir cleaned up at the festival by winning in the mixed choir category and also Best Overall. Also, the choir’s singing groups Kanske and Slavonic Tractor won awards in their own categories.
